Yeah, the title kinda gives it away, doesn’t it? Not that I’m politically inclined as such, mind you, but that I do have an opinion or two about it. Not about politics as such. I don’t care if you’re left or right, up or down, if you believe in this or that. What I do care about is how we treat each other and I have some pretty hefty opinions in that regard.
The world is a mess. Has it always been a mess? Pretty sure it has, but hey … it could be worse, I guess. As a Dane I can’t really complain. Compared to other countries we have it very good here. Of course, we pay a lot of taxes and that doesn’t seem like it will change any time soon. But we do get a lot for our tax money. Free healthcare (which I have a few choice words about but not in this article), free education, clean water, a fairly good infrastructure.
Public transportation used to be better. So did healthcare. But the latter is still free (or rather already paid for). The first not so much.
At the moment, it seems that the general idea is to increase prices and decrease service and then they’re scratching their heads over why people get pissed off. And it seems to be a basic concept for some reason. The company I work for does the same thing. As do all companies, I think. They increase prices every year and lower the service level every year and then they wonder why the customers find other providers.
But what do I know? I don’t have a head for business. I have no urge to start my own business for several reasons. A) I’m too old (shut up! I am!) B) I have no sense for business. If it was up to me, I’d provide free of charge service (my forte is IT). C) My bookkeeping skills can fit neatly in the pocketbook of an ant. Yeah, it’s that small. D) I don’t want the responsibility.
A few years back, I finally got out of debt. The last thing I want to do now is create more debt. I want to retire without owing anyone anything if at all possible.
And what does that have to do with politics, you ask? Not a damned thing. I ramble. I think I already said that in my introduction.
What’s happening in the USA right now is not politics either. Of that much I’m sure. It just completely and utterly baffles me that anyone in their right mind would vote for someone like Trump. I get it, I get it, you guys are all tired of politicians and he makes a lot of noise about draining the swamp and lowering prices and so on and so forth. The problem for me is … it is so evident that he’s lying his ass off every time he opens his trap that I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that some believe him.
That he has been elected for a second term is even more confusing to me. He has lied, lied, lied his way through his first 4 years. What makes anyone think that he will do anything different this time around? Because he is now backed by other billionaires? Because Elon Musk is backing him? I mean … Musk? I must admit to being marginally disappointed in Mark Zuckerberg. I thought he was better than that. Guess I was wrong on that front, eh?
If I could get away from Facebook/Threads and find a social network that isn’t run by some lunatic billionaire and all my Facebook friends would come along … I would switch right now. I feel no loyalty to FB as such. It’s a tool. If a better one comes along, I’ll go get that. But … and this is the issue here … I have friends on FB that don’t use other things and I don’t want to lose them.
But again … what does that have to do with politics? Hmm …
So, I am not politically inclined. In other words, I don’t believe any of them, so I don’t lean to any specific side. I just want us all to live good, healthy lives where nobody has to suffer, be poor or sick without getting any help. I find it disgusting that some people (like Musk) have so much wealth that they can buy whole countries, while normal people struggle to get by. How is that fair?
Okay, now I can hear all those ***** rumbling about how I’m a socialist or a communist, bla-bla-bla. Let me turn it around on you. Try to have some fucking compassion for others. I always hear/read about how this and that person has worked their way up and has sacrificed so much to become so insanely wealthy that not even his great grandchildren will be able to spend his fortune in their lifetime, and how we should admire people like that. No fucking way. People like that do not amass that kind of wealth by being nice to others. They break backs and bury bodies to get ahead. They underpay their workers and many treat them like shit too. And in the end, it may be their vision, but it sure as hell isn’t their hard work that got them that far. It’s the hard work of the people they employ to do the hard work for them.
Am I pissed off about that? You bet your effing ass I am. Priorities in our society - and I don’t care where - are completely off kilter. So call me a socialist. Call me a communist if you want. I don’t give a flying fuck.
It has taken me many years to get to the point where I’ve realized that this is not misfortune, that so many don’t have enough, while the few at the top have it all and more than they can ever spend. It’s human nature. Or appears to be. If indifference to the suffering of others is what drives business, then I think business should collapse and die.
Do I have a better plan? To paraphrase the orange menace: I have concepts of a plan. Fortunately for all you rich assholes out there, I’m not in charge. Because, if I were, I would strip you of your wealth and divide it evenly amongst everyone.
In my humble opinion - and I have a damned right to have any opinion I want - the human race sucks. We destroy everything around us and grab as much as we can on the way. Just ask yourself this question then. What does it help, that you amass that much wealth, that many possessions? In the end, you can’t take it with you. When you die - and you will die eventually - regardless of what you believe happens after death, you can’t take your physical belongings with you. So, what’s the point? I don’t think that the point is to grab as much as you can so you have the biggest pile of useless rubbish in the playground.
Now we get to a topic that I don’t really want to discuss here, but I will mention in passing, which is that I consider myself to be an agnostic atheist. Take a look at the intro to read more about what that means. Essentially, I don’t believe in a deity, and in that respect, I don’t believe there is anything after death. I believe that when you die, you’re gone. That’s it. End of story. Which makes it even more insane that some spend their entire lives fucking others over and trampling as many as they can to amass as much wealth as possible so they - in the end - can just fade away to nothingness, taking nothing with them.
Obviously, if there are no consequences to your behavior in life after you die, why should you care how you treat others then? Well, because it feels good to help others. It’s purely selfish, yes. I don’t claim to be altruistic at all. But I feel better about myself if I don’t stab others in the back or make their lives miserable. It’s a rush when you make others happy.
Don’t get me wrong. I hate poverty. I don’t like not having money. If I won the lottery tomorrow (enough to get me out of working any more, mind you), I would quit my job in a hot second and retire. If I win more than I can spend, I will definitely share with someone close to me. How much that exactly is I don’t know. I know what I need as a minimum to live out my life without ever having to work again. Anything above that line is icing on the cake.
I don’t claim to be perfect. Actually, I hate that word : perfect. It’s ridiculous to strive for something you can never achieve. And there is no such thing as perfection. It’s a ridiculous concept, which sets those seeking it up for failure. You cannot possibly be without fault ever. That just doesn’t happen.
Now I can hear those that feel offended by my opinions bitch about me either being angry all the time or delusional or whatever. You can’t call me any names I haven’t heard a million times before. You are entitled to your opinion. I just have the right to not give a shit what you think about me, so getting derisive and using slurs won’t get you anywhere with me, because I honestly don’t give a shit what you think. This mainly goes for those that think they can bully others into their beliefs.
That said, I do like a good discussion as long as it’s amicable. Anyone who gets into a discussion because they want to be right and don’t actually give a shit what others think … well, they can take a long walk off a short pier.
So, convince me that the republicans are right and that you should shit on others to get ahead in life and I’ll be a republican. Fact is, though, that you can’t. There is nothing in this world you can say or do that will convince me that this is the only way to live.
Everything in moderation, though. What do I mean by that? I mean that being nice to others is the way to go, but being stupid about it isn’t. I’ve found in my life that being too naive is not good for your health. Watch people you interact with. See how much they reciprocate. See how they respond to your help/advice/whatever. Keep your eyes open and your senses alert. Once you know where you have people and whether or not you can trust them, you can either choose to walk away or to relax. Personally, I don’t relax around a lot of people. I generally choose to walk away and if I can’t for whatever reason, I keep my distance.
So, no, this post wasn’t political at all. Or was it?
